Emerging Risk Research Program

Helping solve challenges that were too difficult to quantify

How Emerging Risk Research Topics are Selected

The Emerging Risk research program works at the cutting edge of science to identify and quantify emerging climate and weather-related risks. To date, the program has delivered groundbreaking research on the "new normal" of tornadoes, wind, and hail, as well as the effect of solar storms on the electric power grid.

Participants from a variety of industries sponsor Emerging Risk research. Sponsors prioritize topics to research, participate in research review, and receive in-depth findings and quantitative actionable data to develop rating plans and product strategies.

Commercial and personal lines insurers and associated industries need better quantification of the changing landscape of tornado, wind, and hail risk. IBHS’s mission is to conduct objective, scientific research to promote effective actions that strengthen businesses and homes against severe storms, and Verisk's research reinforces that objective by helping us understand the new normal, why these numbers are shifting, and where they are trending.
