NEW YORK, June 29, 1998 — Insurance Services Office, Inc. (ISO), through its Engineering and Safety Service division, is offering a new independent study course called "The Construction Process" for loss control personnel, risk managers and others involved in the building process.
The course, a comprehensive guide to understanding the building construction process, is designed to help reduce losses on construction projects by helping risk professionals understand and effectively analyze construction hazards.
Construction processes are usually highly technical, but this self-study course is organized to systematically follow the construction of a typical project and provide an overview of the key steps, including computer applications, contracts, procurement and scheduling, among others.
The course was developed to help risk professionals to:
- Better understand the principles and fundamentals of the construction process;
- Identify the key players, concepts and issues involved in the construction business;
- Describe and illustrate the components, materials, building methods and differences among various construction systems and terminology;
- Break a project down into the normal sequence of events — from site work through completion;
- Identify potential safety hazards and evaluate possible risks;
- Develop safety plans, specifications and controls to minimize potential hazards;
- Effectively reduce and control losses.
ISO's new course comes with an optional final exam. Students who finish the course and pass the exam within a four-month period can obtain three continuing education units (CEU) from the Engineering & Safety Service, a division of ISO's American Insurance Services Group (AISG) unit. These credits can be used toward maintaining the Certified Safety Professional designation and other designations.
