Expanded SDS Authoring Capabilities Facilitate Streamlined Compliance with New Document and Labeling Requirements
Carlsbad, CA, March 29, 2012 — 3E Company, a leading provider of EH&S compliance and information management services, today announced that it has enhanced its specialized GHS practice to help ease conformance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) 2012, which now aligns with the United Nations’ (UN) Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).
OSHA published the Hazard Communication Standard 2012 in the Federal Register on March 26, 2012, with the final rule affecting millions of workplaces and having a profound effect on the supply chain. HCS 2012 introduces a set of criteria for classifying human health and physical hazards, as well as OSHA-defined hazards and hazards not otherwise classified (HNOC), which has far-reaching implications for the data contained within Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) and product labels. Many companies will need to reclassify their hazardous materials and capture additional data for publication on labels and SDSs. In many instances, SDSs and labels will need to be re-authored to conform to the new guidelines set forth in HCS 2012.
With the deadline for adopting these significant changes looming on the horizon, 3E Company has further expanded its specialized GHS practice to ease the burden of conforming to these complex new requirements. Specifically, the company is enhancing its many SDS authoring solutions to better support conformance with HCS 2012. The enhancements include:
- support for specialized MSDS Authoring Services to assist manufacturers, users, and distributors in conveying critical hazard communication information to their employees and downstream customers in accordance with HCS 2012
- the introduction of a new Authoring on Request Service for manufacturers with smaller authoring projects requiring the development of documents conforming to HCS 2012 for 20 products or less (This new service is designed to be extremely efficient and attractive for small to mid-size companies that require only a limited number of documents.)
- numerous GHS-related enhancements to the MSDgen® MSDS authoring system to facilitate the generation of SDS and label documents conforming to HCS 2012
“With the official promulgation of HCS 2012, the clock is now ticking toward implementation. We strongly advise affected companies to begin executing their compliance initiatives if they have not already done so,” said Robert S. Christie, CEO and president, 3E Company. “3E is well positioned to facilitate compliance with GHS in both the United States and around the globe because we possess the data, tools, systems, processes, and best practices to help our customers conform to both the product and workplace safety obligations outlined in the rule. We have been helping our customers conform to GHS since it was first implemented in New Zealand in 2001, and over the last 11 years, we have obtained a vast amount of GHS-related experience, which will be very valuable to companies now moving to conform to HCS 2012.”
