Verisk launches the next generation of medical decision support in Mavera DSS
Today Verisk introduces new AI functionality in Mavera DSS, the AI-powered decision support system for bodily injury claims. The system can now guide claims handlers and medical advisors through key medical questions such as causation, medical disability and claim complexity, directly in the claim and based on the medical documentation. This enables claims handlers to answer more questions and complete more assessments independently, and to prepare cases for medical review more efficiently and with better substantiated documentation.

Medical assessments are a central part of bodily injury claims. At the same time, claims handlers face questions every day that require experience, extensive review of documentation and, in many cases, specialist expertise. The new decision support provides guidance on questions such as medical disability, causation and claim complexity, with the goal of creating more consistent assessments and ensuring that medical expertise is used where it creates the greatest value.
"For many years, our focus has been on helping claims handlers understand medical documentation faster and involve medical expertise when needed. Now we are taking the next step. We see a clear shift in the market: the expectation is no longer just that systems present information, but that they also help the user understand what that information means for the specific claim. With AI, we can provide guidance on medical questions directly in the claim and help claims handlers make better informed decisions. At the same time, medical expertise becomes at least as important as before, because it can be focused on the claims where it makes the greatest difference. That is what the next generation of medical decision support is all about." — Johan Larsson, Managing Director Nordics, Verisk
New capabilities for medical assessments
The next generation of Mavera DSS brings several new capabilities for insurers and claims handlers.
Guidance on medical disability: Provides an indication of medical disability together with supporting rationale and references to the relevant rating tables. Designed as decision support, the capability helps the user understand and evaluate the assessment.
Ask the claim: Users can ask questions directly to the claim and receive answers based on the medical documentation, together with references to the underlying source.
Guidance on causation: Analyzes the medical documentation and presents the factors supporting and opposing a link between the injury and the reported symptoms.
Claim complexity assessment: Provides guidance on the next step in the process and helps the organization identify when additional medical expertise should be involved.
A new step for bodily injury claims
The launch marks a new step in how insurers can work with medical assessments. By giving claims handlers guidance on medical questions directly in the claim, more questions can be answered earlier in the process, while medical expertise can be focused on the most complex assessments.
