Rhode Island no longer accepting SR-22 filings

Effective immediately, the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles will no longer require, and will no longer accept, SR-22 financial responsibility filings. The Rhode Island DMV issued Industry Alert 2018-2 for elimination of SR-22 Filings effective July 18, 2018.

In light of the notice issued by the DMV, insurance companies:

  • Must honor insureds’ requests to cancel SR-22 filings effective July 18, 2018.
  • Are no longer required to provide SR-26 Notifications of Cancellation to the DMV.
  • Are encouraged to proactively reach out to insureds, providing notice of cancellation of the SR-22 filing.
  • Must initiate any adjustments in premiums resulting from such cancellations as appropriate, effective July 18, 2018.

This does not apply to GU-1338 (Special Financial Responsibility Insurance Certificate) policies, which cover minors or businesses that are required to provide these filings to the DMV.
