Rhode Island notification process

The Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) issues three notices to motorists when proof of auto liability coverage is not found for a vehicle.

  • Initial Notice
  • Final Notice
  • Revocation Notice

Beginning October 1, 2017, the RI DMV reduced the amount of days between their notices from 30 days to 15 days.  The final notice will be sent to an insured if they do not provide proof of coverage within 15 days of receiving an initial notice, and the revocation notice (notice stating the registration is revoked) will be sent within 15 days of the final notice.
