Louisiana House Bill 638

By Kerri Crocker September 1, 2015

Louisiana recently enacted House Bill 638. This legislation imposes the maximum fine of $525 on registrants who have not paid or resolved a notice of noncompliance with the state’s compulsory insurance law within 60 days of the violation.

This can be problematic for registrants who do not take immediate and appropriate action when a noncompliance notice is received. As a result of this new law, regardless of whether a registrant had coverage and regardless of why the state may have incorrectly identified the motorist as uninsured, the registrant will be required to pay the $525 fine if the notice is not resolved within the 60-day time frame indicated.
