Compulsory insurance penalties increase in Louisiana

Effective June 12, 2014, Louisiana House Bill 872 significantly increased penalties for operating a motor vehicle without required insurance and failing to provide required proof of compliance.

If an insured meets liability requirements in the state of Louisiana, the responsibility of reporting coverage lies with the insurer. The increased penalty makes it even more important for insurers to report coverage accurately and in a timely manner — to avoid fees for their insureds.

The bill also requires that a portion of the assessed penalties be used to fully fund the creation and maintenance of a real-time system that verifies motor vehicle insurance.
