Statistical Plans on ISOnet

ISOnet® — the Internet information service for insurance professionals — now gives you online access to ISO statistical plans.

What is a statistical plan?

One of ISO's fundamental services is to collect statistical data from insurance companies. Each year, insurers send us about 2 billion detailed records of premiums and losses. We compile that data into aggregate insurance statistics, available to insurers and state regulators. The service helps insurers comply with state requirements to report data and gives regulators information from many insurers in a common format. ISO also uses the data as the basis for many of the informational products we supply for the insurance industry.

To make that process possible, ISO works with state regulators to develop detailed instruction books called statistical plans (or coding manuals). The plans define:

  • the data elements
  • how to code the data elements
  • the record layouts for formatting information from insurance contracts

ISO maintains statistical plans for personal auto, personal lines (other than auto), and commercial lines. For each of those, we have two or three levels of detail for reporting data. The levels recognize that some of our participating insurers write a small volume of business for some lines of insurance and may not be able to report statistics in full detail.
